CCSSE Benchmarks: Student Effortstudent

Here's what students have to say about Student Effort...

"Some students, they know we have assignments, they come in to class, and then they're unprepared. They don't have their homework, they're not ready for the test, or they'll leave halfway during the class. I think they're just setting themselves up for failure is what I'm seeing."

"Last semester when I took college algebra, I was in the tutoring center like every day 'cause we had homework every day. The tutor really helped me understand every single little thing on every prolem. Going to tutoring, basically if I wouldn't had been there, I probably would have failed the class. It helped me tremendously."

"Nobody really wants to go to tutoring and ask for help. You're just like, 'Nah, I can do it. I can do it.' And then when you go in there, you're like, 'Man, they're gonna make me feel stupid,' and then it might be something really easy but you're confused about it. That's what some of my friends were telling me, that they don't like going to tutoring 'cause they might feel dumb. But, then it helps when they do go in there, so it's kind of a give and take."

"I haven't gone to tutoring. I've heard of it and I thought about going too, to get some help, but I don't know what to do. Do I go in there and ask? I don't know how. I just don't want to tell them, 'I don't know how to do this. I need help.'"

"When you're working on homework, you just sit there and say, 'Ah, I don't need help. I can do this.' And then you're just confused and you're like, 'Man! I should have went to tutoring.' And I mean, it's worth it to go. The other part was just doing it. That's just another thing, overcoming laziness. Just go and do it. The outcome is worth it."

"I skipped class because if you read the chapter, that's exactly what my instructor is going to say in class."

When I was doing my remedial maths I went to the tutoring lab. That's the best thing that you can offer at a community college. I just kinda lived in there. I kinda spent more time in there than in the class 'cause you get more one-on-one time. That's pretty much the only thing that got me through that."

"I think you have to be motivated 'cause there's going to be times when you don't want to have to do the work but you have to. You have to think, 'If I don't do it now, when the test comes, I'm not going to be successful.' And just reminding yourself of that every day. That's what helps you do well in these classes. And, having the motivation to find help when you need it."

"I tend not to study because my teachers lecture over what they wanted you to read the night before so reading seems pointless often. Once you go and you sit there and you say, 'Why am I even here? You're telling me everything I read last night.'"
